Episode 2 is finally edited

Good news: all of the editing on 'GetBent!' Episode 2 is complete and fully rendered out. That means all we have to do is finalize the DVD menus and we're ready to go to manufacturing. If all goes according to plan, it'll be shipped off on monday, so we should get the final DVDs back in our hands in about two weeks.

Woo-hoo!

October 15, 2006

Episode 2 is nearing completion

Thought I'd post a quick update on the status of "GetBent!" Episode 2...we've finished about 90% of the final editing, so we're very close to complete. Unfortunately, it's taken us a LOT longer than expected. That's due to several factors, one of which is that I got a new job last month (yay!), but the real reason is that we had twice as much footage to edit as we originally planned to have.

The good news is that this video looks to be really, really good--substantially better than Episode 1, if we do say so ourselves.

The bad news is that whle we will be finished in October (which was our original hope), the manufacturing process is going to delay the actual ship date into November. Now to be honest, we probably could rush this out the door "as-is" and still meet our original October ship date, but we feel it needs just a bit more work to make it the best possible product it can be.

Anyways, back to the editing grindstone. And as always, feel free to drop me an email if you have any questions or comments.

Jim Parker (1944-2006)

A litle over a week ago on July 30th, Jim Parker, a Jeeper and fellow club member of Lone Star Jeep Club, was killed in a tragic accident while wheelin in Ouray, Colorado.

Several LSJC club members were in Colorado attending a Four Wheelin event. On Saturday, the group was travelling down a mountain shelf road, with a 400ft drop off on one side and a 200ft cliff above them on the other. Apparently the area had received a lot of rain recently and by chance a couple off rocks dislodged somewhere overhead and fell towards the Jeeps on the road below.

Two rocks hit Jim's Jeep: a small grapefruit-sized one hit the hood and went straight through it, and a larger and a watermelon-sized one weighing at least 75 lbs landed directly on the top of the Jeep, tore through the bikini top, bent the roll bar, broke his passenger Nancy Ingle's arm, and killed Jim. When he slumped over, Nancy grabbed the wheel and turned the Jeep into the cliff, which subsequently caused the rig to flop over on the side. Her quick thinking prevented the Jeep from driving off the shelf road drop off, which surely would have resulted in two deaths.

I was in total shock, as I'm sure everyone else who knew him was, when I heard the tragic news. It was a freak accident that took the life of one of the most cheerful Jeepers I'd ever met. Every time I went to a Jeep event, Jim was always the first person to walk across the room or the parking lot or wherever and say "Hi" and shake my hand.

On a filming trip to Clayton this past February, Jim had a bit of bad luck and sliced the sidewall on a tire...while I was filming him. Well most people would tend to get upset at that sort of thing, but not Jim. He surveyed the damage, pointed out the rock that got his tire/rockring, smiled, and then grabbed a Hi-Lift Jack and his spare tire. A few minutes later and he was off and running again, smiling ear-to-ear.

Jim was such a great guy; his funeral was a testament to that. His friends and family packed the room and recounted stories of his love for life...especially food, flying, and Jeeps. And fittingly, the funeral procession was a long line of his fellow Jeepers.

Jim may be gone now, but we've got some wonderful footage of him enjoying his Jeep pastime that will definately be in our upcoming Episode 2 DVD, which should be out this fall (tentatively October). Definately check it out, and remember that Jim truly loved his Jeep adventures.

Thanks for the memories, Jim. You're missed by so many.

Moab: Four Days in June

We just got back last night from a 4-day video shoot in Moab, and once again we were absolutely amazed by that part of the country. I am beginning to understand why so many people hold it in such high regard; of all the places I've been, nothing quite compares to Moab. Now sure, the wheelin itself out at Katemcy Rocks--the location of our GetBent! Episode 1 DVD--is quite similar to Moab; in fact it's common to hear Katemcy Rocks described as a "Mini Moab" because the rolling granite hills are so similar to the Moab slickrock. But Moab is on a whole different scale: it's literally larger-than-life.

Take for example the 'Moab Rim' trail. Here is a photo of Jason Shields of Red Rock 4x4 on an obstacle called Z-Turn. It's more than just a slickrock obstacle; it's perched atop a hundred-plus foot cliff in a red rock canyon overhanging the vast Colorado River. You simply just don't get scenery like this anywhere else. Jason and his crew of rowdy buddies took us up to the top of the trail where we had a spectacular view overlooking the entire town of Moab. If you're planning a Moab trip, I highly recommend running this trail. It's just a couple miles west of town, right off Kane Creek Road which runs adjacent to the Colorado River. This isn't a particularly difficult trail; a decently built rig on 33's should be able to successfully navigate it. The first 1/4 mile is the only spooky part, and that's mostly because you're basically wheelin on the edge of a cliff. But the scenery alone makes this one a worthwhile trail.

In addition to the rolling slickrock fins east of town and the deep canyons west of town, there's a completely different type of terrain about 15 minutes south of town at Area BFE. The tree-lined trails down there feature loose boulders, sharp ledges, and insane v-cracks that almost guarantee tire lifting, as Beth Schmidgall of 4x4 Land demonstrates here. The terrain is different than Moab proper because Area BFE sits at the foothills of the La Sal mountains--yup, those snow-capped peaks you see in the background of so many Moab photos. Strangely enough, the La Sal mountains may look like there really far away, but they're actually surprisingly close to Moab; like I said, Area BFE is only about 15 minutes away.

As you can see here in this photo of the legendary Harold Off from Off Again Off Road, the ledges at Area BFE can be extremely steep and challenging. A little later in the day, Harold actually flopped his Jeep on it's side. Naturally I was filming it, but the footage isn't that great; you see, Harold flopped about 2 feet in front of me as he was driving by, so all I could see through the camera was his tailgate turning 90 degrees--LOL! I actually had to put the camera down and help push him back on his tires. And if you know Harold, you know that the flop didn't phase him one bit; I think he wheeled even harder after that! I swear, he did things on 35" tires that rigs with 44" Swampers had trouble with. And by the way, this is his "small" Jeep; I'm curious how he wheels in his bigger rig--he must be absolutely unstoppable in it!

All told, we spent four days in and around Moab filming a variety of trails and scenic locations with several great groups of wheelers. Moab truly is a special place; we had a great time out there and can't wait to go back. Of course, since the summertime 100 degree plus weather is upon us, we're going to wait until it cools down in the fall to go back out there. Look for us to make another Moab trip around the middle of October. Personally, I can't wait to go back.

Primary filming for Episode 2 is done

A couple weeks ago, over Memorial Day weekend, we finished shooting all our primary footage for 'GetBent!' Episode 2 - Clayton. In fact, we've completed all our B-roll shooting as well. We do have some other 'secret' filming we haven't completed yet, but I can't talk about that just quite yet--you'll just have to wait until the video is out this fall to find out what special stuff we're including this time around. The only thing I can tell you that it's gonna be really cool.

One quick note about our Memorial Day video shoot: a crazy guy named Craig in a big white Jeep CJ rolled his rig completely over...HARD! And wouldn't you know it, I was only feet away from his rig, and of course it had to roll TOWARDS me! LOL! Here's a picture to illustrate my proximity to the rolling Jeep:

(click the pic to enlarge)

Yeah, that's me crouched on a rock BEHIND the rear tire of the rig, right under the yellow spray paint trail marker! The rig continued to flop from here onto it's side, literally landing inches from my feet. I gotta tell ya, my heart was pumping from that one! The shot turned out really well; I swear, you can really FEEL the rollover! And of course, Craig was screaming "Woo-hoo! Yeah Baby!" as his rig was rolling over. That guy knows how to have a good time. Ha ha!

We are shooting for a September/October release date for the second episode DVD; July and August will be dedicated strictly to editing/authoring.

In the meantime, we're packing our bags tomorrow because we're flying out to Moab for our second video shoot out there for Episode 3. We've got a busy shooting schedule setup for the end of this week and through the weekend, and we're hoping to get some more great slickrock footage.

I just hope I don't have to get so close to a roll over this time. ;-)

Almost done filming Episode 2

We were out on the trails again this past weekend filming for 'GetBent!' Episode 2 - Clayton. We made the trip with a pair of Professional Rock Crawlers, Weston Blackie (#781) and Bryan Gillespie (#187) of the Loose Cannon Offroad Racing team. Both drive Campbell Enterprises competition buggies; Weston has a rear-engine Moon buggy, and Bryan has a more traditional front-engine buggy.

WESTON BLACKIE (#781)
While these guys are used to running PRO events on the W.E.ROCK and XRRA competition circuts, they decided to spend a day with us running one of the nastiest, narliest trails in Clayton, Oklahoma--the 'Black Sheep Bounty' trail at the Green Acres off-road park. Needless to say, we got some GREAT footage of these nimble little comp buggies hitting trails usually reserved for the Big Dawgs--in fact, we shot some of those types of rigs a month or so ago on this same trail; those rigs were all running 42" to 44" Super Swamper TSL tires on built 1-ton Dana 60 axles. You'll find footage from that trip on Episode 2 as well.

BRYAN GILLESPIE (#187)
Both of these rigs are extremely small and light, much more so than any standard trail rig. A typical modified Jeep will weigh in a over #4000 lbs, and it's not uncommon for a fully built rig on 1-ton axles to exceed #5000 lbs. In comparison, Bryan's front engine Campbell buggy weighs in at around #3600 lbs (running D60 and 14 bolt axles) and Weston's tiny little rear engine Campbell buggy is only around #2800 lbs (running Currie 9" axles). And since both vehicles are running 40" Maxxis Super Sticky (competition only) Creepy Crawler tires powered with big LS1 V8 engines, their power-to-weight ratio is outta this world. They just light up the trail; you won't believe the footage till you see it!

We will be heading out to Clayton one more time to get footage for Episode 2, and that will be this weekend for the big FWD-FWD Memorial Day High Country Trail Rides event. We'll be shooting a lot of normal trail-riding footage for this event, and we hope to capture more of the scenic aspect of the beautiful trails in and around Clayton. If you happen to be in the area, head out there for the event--maybe you'll end up on our next DVD!

'GetBent!' featured at the new FlexOnThis.com

I must admit that when I received their email a week or so ago, I'd never even heard of the website www.FlexOnThis.com. You see, they contacted me to say two things: (#1) they were about to launch a new site re-design, and (#2) they wanted to include the "GetBent! Episode 1" trailer in their featured Video/DVD section. Naturally -- being the attention hound that I am -- I accepted their gracious offer, which even included file hosting. What a deal!

Now I have no idea what the old website looked like, or even what it contained, but I do know that I like this new one! So if you're sitting there on your duff surfing the Internet and pretending to work (you know, like the rest of us are) then head on over and take a look at their new website.

You can check out the actual "videos" page here at at this direct link.

Uh, I don't think I'll be staying here!

I saw this and just had to laugh; the name itself of this National Forest in Montana is laughable enough, but this particular cabin name is just killing me! LOL!

Moab EJS was...amazing!

After spending the last week in Moab, UT filming for GetBent! Episode 3, there's only one word I can use to describe 40th anniversary Easter Jeep Safari -- AMAZING!

We knew there'd be thousands of 4x4 rigs in town, but knowing it and actually seeing it are two completely different things. Until you've seen thousands of Jeeps all lined up on the streets, and until you've seen thousands of spectators cheering on the madness at Potato Salad Hill, words just won't do it justice.

Naturally, we captured our experiences on video, so you WILL be able to see it! But you'll have to wait until GetBent! Episode 3 - Moab ships next winter. Until then, we'll continue to work on GetBent! Episode 2 - Clayton, which is shaping up to be an awesome video. We've got two more video shoots planned, the last of which will be Memorial Day. Afterwords, we'll be editing and producing that DVD for release late this summer.

Thanks for your support; we'll see you on the trails!

April 05, 2006

Boy have we been busy!

Man, we've had a busy couple of weeks! It started off poorly when I broke my toe; it's not bad, and thankfully it's just the next-to-last small toe so I'm really not hindered too much, but it sure does hurt if I bend it the wrong way! I've had it taped up for a while now, and it's getting much better. The purple color is almost all gone. He-he!

Of course, one week after I broke my toe, I was out hiking on the rocks in Clayton, Oklahoma shooting footage for Episode 2. That hurt, but we got a ton of great footage. The trails in Clayton are truly incredible; nothing like crawlin over a solid string of craggy boulders all day! This was our third trip to Clayton for video coverage, and we've got two more shooting trips scheduled, including a two-day shoot to cover the big FWD-FWD 2006 Memorial Day High Country Trail Ride event.

Right now, we've got about 14 hours of Clayton footage, and we anticipate shooting at least 12 to 16 more hours. That'll give us around 30 hours of footage to edit, which is about twice what we shot for Episode 1; should make for an even more exciting video!

In addition to shooting footage for Episode 2, we're about to start shooting footage for Episode 3 as well! We'll be heading out to Moab, Utah for the famous Easter Jeep Safari event, shooting three solid days out there. Yeah, it's really early for us to be starting on Episode 3 already, but we feel that we've GOT to include some EJS footage in a video featuring Moab; it's a big part of what Moab has become such a special 4 wheelin destination. After EJS, we've got several more trips planned to Moab later in the year, including a long weekend in June, a week in August, and a possible trip in September as well.

But after the EJS trip, we'll be getting right back to work on Episode 2. We're hoping to ship it in late summer/early fall.

Oh, and one more thing...

This is kinda geeky and it probably won't interest most of you, but we just bought another camera. It's a SONY HVR-A1U model, very similar to the DSR-PDX10 cameras we currently shoot with (in fact, the A1U replaced the PDX10) but with one big differrence: it's HIGH-DEFINITION HDV. Woo-hoo!

See you on the trails!

Buying 'GetBent!' in your local 4x4 store

We've had several 4x4 shops approach us about stocking/selling our 'GetBent!' DVDs in their stores. Naturally, the local shops here in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex are the ones asking first, but we've had a couple other places interested as well...and truth be told, we don't even have our vendor program setup entirely yet! We're still putting together the retail Point-of-Purchase display and signage kits, and those probably won't be ready for a couple more weeks. Guess we didn't anticipate that 4x4 shops would be wanting these for their shelves so soon!

Here are the places you'll soon be able to pick up a Get Bent DVD in-person (a few already have them, and we're trying to get the rest stocked up this week):

TEXAS
DALLAS, TX - Baertrax
ARLINGTON, TX - No Limits 4x4
PLANO, TX - Expert Offroad
AZLE, TX - PSC Motorsports
WYLIE, TX - Collins Brothers Jeep
MASON, TX - Katemcy Rocks Off-Road Ranch

ARKANSAS
HOT SPRINGS, AR - Superlift Off Road Vehicle Park

KANSAS
TOPEKA, KS - Expert Offroad

We'll be adding a "where to buy" page on our website soon with these retail locations, as well as others we add in the future. And if you don't see your local 4x4 shop listed here, then ask them to get the DVDs in-stock and on the shelves!

And if you are a 4x4 shop who'd like to carry the 'GetBent!' DVDs in your store, contact us at info@getbent4x4.com and we'll get you setup with our special vendor program!

Orders keep coming in, and we keep shipping them out!

Well this has been a particularly busy week for us; in addition to all the regular work we do, we receive orders everyday and take a load of packages to the post office every other day or so. We haven't gotten to know the lady at the post office on a first-name basis yet, but we're getting close to that point. ;-)

We're also receiving a LOT of incredibly positive feedback from folks who've seen the video. We're going to try and put together a list of review "quotes" on our website when we get a chance, but considering how busy we are that may be a few weeks away from happening. But if you've got feedback, please send it to us at customerservice@getbent4x4.com so we can include it in the upcoming review quotes page.

Thanks for all the support, and we hope you'll continue to support us!

A great first week!

Wow, what a wild and crazy week it's been--whew! We got the first DVDs a week ago (the boxes that came overnight) and shipped out the pre-orders, and promptly sold out of that initial inventory within 3 days! We then received the remainder of our DVDs (the boxes that came via ground service) and we emptied an entire case of those in one night, just to fill orders that had come in that week alone. We were totally blown away! So THANK YOU again for the sales--we appreciate your faith in us!

In addition to shipping copies to people, we also are in the middle of shipping copies to local 4x4 shops for retail sales. Two of our sponsors, Baertrax and No Limits 4x4 operate local 4x4 shops, and both will be selling copies of the DVDs in their stores. If you're in the area, stop by and talk to the fine folks at those shops! And of course, mention that you saw they're sponsoring GetBent!

The other two DFW-area 4x4 shops that will be receiving DVDs for retail sale are PSC Motorsports and also Expert Offroad. So if you frequent any of these shops and want to purchase a DVD in person instead of online, they'll have them for you!

One more thing...

This coming weekend, we will be at BMRA in Gilmer, TX where Lone Star Jeep Club will be having their "Election Day Run" and picnic. We will be out there with videos and t-shirts for sale on Saturday during the picnic lunch! We also are helping to sponsor the event with a donation of 4 copies of the DVD.

We hope to see you there!

March 02, 2006

All Pre-Orders are shipped!

Just a quick update about shipping; ALL pre-orders of both DVDs and T-shirts (meaning, all orders placed between our announcement date of Jan 30th through Feb 28th) were packed up and shipped out yesterday and today. They hit the main Dallas Post Office beffore the last pickup, and are probably working their way through the mail sorting system as I type this. So if you ordered, start watching your mailboxes!

I think I'm going to get some sleep now; I was up until 3:30 this morning putting all of those packages together so we could ship them out today. I'm very tired; HAPPY that these initial orders are filled, but tired nonetheless. I'm going to sleep like a rock tonight. :-)

The DVDs are here!

The first batch of DVDs arrived in our office today -- we had a good chunk of them delivered overnight, and the remainder are coming via Ground Service next week -- and we're working as fast as we can to get mailing labels generated and put them in the mail to all the folks who pre-ordered. We snatched one out of the box, tore off the shrinkwrap, popped it into the DVD player, and watched the whole thing, including all the DVD extras. Everything is perfect! We couldn't be more pleased with the manufacturing; like everything else, we strive to create a top-notch professional product, and the DVD packaging is right on target.

Also, in a totally unrelated manufacturing process, our T-shirts showed up today as well! We weren't sure if we were going to get them done in time, but our screen printer busted their tails to make it happen on time. Big kudos to Mike (a fellow Jeeper who wheels a CJ-7) at ClownCo Screen Printing in Mesquite, Texas. There are a lot of t-shirt companys in the world, and they're all price competitive, but if you want great service and fast turn times, and want to support another four wheeler in the process, give Mike a call.

One more comment about the t-shirts: they're 100% cotton Hanes shirts, black fabric with the 'GetBent!' logo on the front in white ink. But if you'll notice, there's no physical 'size' tag; instead, these are the new 'tagless' shirts with the brand/size info printed on the inside of the neck. That's actually pretty neat because t-shirt tags can sometimes be annoying and irritating. I definately like this tagless feature, and will be sure to look for them in the future.

Well we're gonna get back to work now; I just figured I'd take a break from all the packing & shipping to post these pics and info. We just wanted to let you know that if you pre-ordered, your package is beeing put together right now and will and heading your direction soon!

And of course, if you haven't ordered your copy yet, NOW is the perfect time to do so! :-)

DVD Manufacturing done!

I just got word from the manufacturer that the DVD manufacturing is COMPLETE! The final DVDs are all boxed up and are being sent to our office in Dallas. The majority of them are being sent via ground service and will most likely arrive here next week, but we have several boxes being sent via Next Day Air so to fill the pre-orders. So they should be here TOMORROW! Woo-hoo!

We will be printing out shipping labels for the next day or so, and will be packaging everything up to get these out ASAP. So if you pre-ordered, expect your DVD to get mailed out in the thrusday/friday timeframe!

I'm so stoked; I can't wait to get these in our hands! :-)

'GetBent!' DVD series on Rockcrawler.com

Well this is a pleasant surprise; we've made the 'News Shorts' section on Rockcrawler.com one of the most famous off-rad related websites on the 'Net!

It's just our initial Press Release, and it's really rather bland without the pictures, but I guess they were too busy to ask for the images (if you're wondering what they are, check out THIS previous news post I made a couple of weeks ago).

Anyways, here's the LINK to the article on Rockcrawler.com! Check it out!

DVD manufacturing Update

Here's a quick update on the DVD manufacturing status. The MASTER is at the DVD manufacturing facility in California, where it is in the process of being glass-mastered and pressed. The artwork is being printed, and when everything is complete they will be putting everything together in a standard DVD case and shrinkwrapping the whole thing. The scheduled date for the manufacturer to send the finished DVDs to us is February 28th, and they're coming to us 'overnight', so assuming everything goes as planned we should be able to send them out on March 1st, just as we originally scheduled.

February 12, 2006

DVD Master is DONE!

Okay, the BAD NEWS is that we had a week full of technical difficulties while making the MASTER of 'GetBent!' to send off for DVD replication. Everything had always worked every other time we'd gone through the process, but something inexplictably went wrong on the FINAL DAY, and it required us to go back and troubleshoot our entire process, as well as re-output all the original files and re-compress them for DVD again, something that takes hours-upon-hours of processing every time you have to do it.

Needless to say, we were a bit freaked out, and we ended up putting in almost 40 hours of overtime this week to complete the first DVD. And since we had to leave town over the weekend for a film shoot (more on that later), we absolutely HAD to get it done in order to have it ready first thing this monday morning.

The GOOD NEWS is that it all worked out in the end; the master is now complete -- in fact, 2 copies of it just spit out of our DVD editing machine and are ready to send out in the moring. We're hopeful our DVD manufacturer can still turn them in time, but even if they are a tad bit late, they should still be back and ready to ship out within the first week of March.

And now for the first time in a week, I can go get a decent, stress-free night of sleep.

New sponsors; update on DVD status

During our first week of pre-order business--which by the way surpassed our sales goal; YAY!--we also managed to pick up three new sponsors for the "Episode 1 - Katemcy Rocks" DVD. It also looks like we've got an additional new sponsor lined up for Episode 2 who just couldn't make the deadline for this episode. We're feverishly working to integrate the sponsor information into the DVD as we speak; in fact I'm typing this news update on one of our field laptops because our main editing computer is busy rendering the new sponsor sequence right now. We'll update the website with the new sponsor information early next week.

That brings us to another point: the status of the "Episode 1 - Katemcy Rocks" DVD itself. Well as it stands, all that has to be done to the main video is to drop in the sponsor sequence (the thing rendering right now) and it will be 100% complete. The DVD structure is 99% complete (I found one bug in the last beta that needs to be addressed). The photo slideshow is 100% complete. The deleted scene (yes, there really is a TRUE deleted scene!) is 100% complete. The only thing left to work on are the outtakes; the rough edit is done, but we still have to work on the final edit, which we can hopefully finish by tomorrow morning.

Once that's done, we'll be doing the FINAL RENDER on all the footage, then drop them into our DVD Studio Pro structure, and burn the master. If all goes according to plan, we should have the master sent off to manufacturing early next week!

Alright, going back to work now to finish these things up. THANK YOU AGAIN for making the new 'GetBent!' 4x4 DVD series a success, and if you haven't placed your order yet, slide on over to our ORDER page and get yours today!

Thank You!

We'd like to extend a BIG THANK YOU to the people who have placed orders already! Our first day of business was a smashing success; we were dang-near dancing around the office that night after seeing the sales numbers!

So thanks again for the orders! We'll be sure to keep this news page updated with the status of the project!

Our press release made news!

Strange that they placed it in the 'Ford' section; I guess all the EBs threw them off. LOL!

New 'GetBent!' DVD Series Features Authentic Wheelin' Adventures

Dallas, TX January 30, 2006 -- A brand-new four wheelin' DVD series titled 'GetBent!' featuring a level of realism rarely seen in 4x4 videos has been announced by American Bootstrap Productions, Inc. Designed to entertain wheelin' enthusiasts of all kinds, 'GetBent!' features a broad spectrum of recreational 4x4 vehicles in popular settings with the authentic sounds of real wheelin' adventures.

The 'GetBent!' series is filmed in true anamorphic widescreen enhanced for today's 16:9 televisions, highlighting the panoramic view of the great outdoors, coupled with Dolby Digital Pro encoded audio showcasing the authentic crunching and scraping sounds of real wheelin' instead of the all too common heavy-music-laden soundtrack. Duane Smith (Producer/Director) stated, "As wheelin' enthusiasts ourselves, we wanted to create a video series showing what it's really like out on the trails, and to do it in a positive, professional manner."

The family-friendly series begins with 'GetBent! - Episode One' focusing on the popular "Katemcy Rocks" off-road park in central Texas, which is known for the intense traction of its granite slickrock terrain. Future episodes will feature other popular four wheeling destinations all across the United States. Individual episodes are available for $19.95 each, or at a special price of $39.95 for a three episode subscription. Visit www.getbent4x4.com for more information.
